„Arbeit am Kopf“

„Arbeit am Kopf“ | "Work on the Head"
An interdisciplinary pilot project
for defending democracy with the help of hairdressers

„Arbeit am Kopf“ tries to put into practice the surprising study results of Oxford climate researchers Dr. Sam Hampton and Dr. Briony Latter. They found that hairdressers can influence people’s thinking and actions more effectively than scientists. If hairdressers, with their special way of empathizing, listening and communicating, also care for the inner beauty of our society, can this often underestimated and underpaid profession save our democracy and also the climate?

Help mobilize this untapped potential as quickly as possible! Inform your hairstylists and your community about the enormous power of salon conversations, and motivate everyone to consciously use these dialogues in the future to defend democracy or for constructive climate discussions. Thank you for your valuable contribution to the collective 'Arbeit am Kopf'!

The first pilot project setting
(part of the project grant DAS KONSULAT, BB Foundation Stuttgart): Invitation and program flyer (see belong), improvised hair salon made from donated furniture, reading table (Hamptons/Latter study and welcome note, the German Constitution, current coalition agreement as a magazine, political and philosophical magazines of various perspectives).

The first pilot project program:
Outreach and networking (involving the study authors, hair salons and their clients, democracy networks, and the art audience), ad-hoc haircuts while the salon opening, open meet-ups and an argumentation workshop for and with hairdressers, project presentation at the annual general meeting of the Hairdressers’ Guild, collecting ideas for the next steps (a large-scale campaign?).

“Dear Martina, […] Sam and I would be keen to write a blog post on the website of our research centres about the link between our research and your Arbeit am Kopf project. […] the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford, where the research was done, will publish […] it on their website and they also want to write a news article about it. […]“ (Dr Briony Latter | Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST) | Cardiff University)
